Summary on Grant Application Form
Atmospheric pressure plasmas have many industrial applications at present and excellent potential for further exploitation for gas phase plasma chemistry and surface conditioning. They have particular advantages for large scale and continuous operations. A novel plasma source has been discovered and patented by EA Technology which offers many engineering and processing advantages. Investigations under the aegis of the PTP scheme has shown that plasmas produced inside a quartz flask in a microwave (oven) cavity exploiting the ready availability of cheap 2.45GHz magnetron sources produced commercially, are only slightly ionised and relatively cool compared with those produced by other techniques. The proposed project aims to determine the active species in the plasma, the electron component of which has already been investigated, and to design, build and operate a new source, similar to a plasma torch or microwave plasmatron, in which the afterglow is easily accessed for further diagnostic studies and application to the processing of material surfaces,
