Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the research is to develop methods for handling singular spacetimes which are both mathematically rigorous and physically meaningful. The focus of the proposed new techniques is to regard weak singularities as interior points of the spacetime rather than boundary points as in the traditional approach. This will involve using generalised functions to describe the metric and other physical fields. This will be applied to obtain the equations of motion of dynamically interacting thin cosmic strings. It is also intended to obtain a general class o singularities which may be treated distributionally in this way. The completion of the project will deliver a set of new mathematical tools for work in general relativity and astrophysics and open up a more powerful way of approaching the cosmic censorship hypothesis.
