Summary on Grant Application Form
A 4 stage model of a high pressure steam turbine has been developed over several years, largely with SERC/EPSRC funding. The last project on the model showed that three dimensional blade design can yield substantial (about 2%) improvements on turbine efficiency for conventionally loaded blades. The current proposal is to extend this work to more highly loaded blades where three-dimensional flows are stronger and so larger improvement should be possible. Differences between predicted and measured flows in the turbine have been largely attributed to the effects of unsteady flow and the current proposal will examine the unsteady flow in more detail using both experient and CFD. Firstly a baseline highly loaded turbine will be designed and tested. This will be based on conventional design rules. Secondly the effects of 3D flow and of unsteady flow will be allowed for in a new three-dimensional design of highly loaded blading which will be manufactured and tested in the facility. Experimental results will be compared to both steady and unsteady CFD predictions. The costs of the new blading for both designs will be provided by Siemens Power Generation UK Ltd.
