Radical approaches will be needed to tackle the congestion arising from the expected doubling of road traffic in the next 15 years. The Technology Foresight Transport Panel has suggested that the UK should investigate the concept of convoys as a solution - in keeping with thinking in much of Europe, the USA and Japan.Convoys of electronically linked vehicles travelling at short headways are expected to significantly improve road usage, and reduce fuel consumption, journey time and driver stress. They are the logical extension for the intelligent cruise control (ICC) system now being deployed.This project will model the move from ICC to convoys, examining in particular the problems of merging into and demerging from the convoy. It will also extend the information links being demonstrated on the Foresight Challenge Project Road Traffic Advisor (RTA), and the EC Telematics project CHAUFFEUR. A secure 60 GHz spread spectrum radio will be developed, based on the CHAFFEUR system, and demonstrated transmitting data between tow cars travelling at motorway speeds. This technology will find early exploitation in adding an extra dimension to ICC by transmitting acceleration/deceleration data from the vehicle being followed.
