|
Recycling wastepaper creates residual waste solids estimated at 20% of the 4 million tones processed annually in the UK. This end of pipe waste, comprising fine cellulose fibbers and clay minerals is disposed of by landspread landfill, and incineration. Alternative ways are being sought to utilize the waste. Phase 1 has demonstrated that post-flocculation end of pipe waste can be used in construction applications and the result substantially exceeded expectations. Even better results can be achieved using pre-flocculation solids. Phase 2 proposes separation technology to capture pre-flocculation solids which are carried in an aqueous solution (about 3% solids). A slurry is required (about 20% solids). This would be more efficient in economic and energy terms than the end of pipe process. The pre-flocculation solids form microstructures superior to those of post-flocculation solids (phase 1). Analysis of the microstructures, their influence on the mechanical properties, scientifically based behavior predictions and subsequent contraction application form the basis of the proposal.
