Summary on Grant Application Form
We will exploit the unique opportunities available with synchrotron radiation techniques to determine both long range and short structural properties of new and existing catalytic materials using both ex situ and in situ techniques; and to monitor structural changes during the synthesis of zeotype materials under operating conditions. The techniques to be employed include High Resolution Powder Diffraction (HRPD), XAFS, (especially in combination), EDXRD, SAXS, and WAXS. The programme will involve extensive development of in situ methods. Wide ranging applications are proposed, with the principal themes being: a) structure determination of microporous (by HRPD and XAFS) b) determination of kinetics of crystallisation of microporous solids c) elucidation of the structures of active centres in mixed-metal oxide oxidation catalysts. A major goal of the project will be to develop improved understanding of the correlation between structure and activity in these materials. To this end, all the experimental work proposed here will be assisted by complementary computational studies.
