When carrying a changing current of in the presence of a changing magnetic field, type II superconductors exhibit energy losses. The level of these 'AC losses' generated in high temperature superconductors can have a critical effect on commercial potential, it can also determine the engineering feasibility of an application. This programme seeks to establish a better understanding of AC losses in high temperature superconductors at power frequencies. This will be achieved by measurements on a wide range of systems and by comparing these data to results from modelling the movement of magnetic fields in these systems. The ultimate goal is to predict and minimise AC losses in more complex systems using htsc. This project builds on the reputation of the IRC as one of the top laboratories in the world in the field of AC losses in HTS conductors, and seeks to maintain the present equipment and expertise at the forefront of world R&D.
