Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will develop a sensor opimised for the detection of low contrast defects in the low x-ray energy range. One of the UK's largest food producers (northern Foods) will set the detection goals in terms of the ranges of defects and products likely to be found and the operating requirements concerning detection speed, width, robustness, temperature and moisture changes in a variety of food processing operation. The sensor will be developed by the combined expertise of an SME Intelligent Measuring Systems (IMS) and Oxford University, Department of Engineering Science. IMS currently use x-ray sensors and have been involved in collaborative European research with Thomson Tube Electroniques (Project CT93-1054 TriAXIS) using linear x-ray sensors for the automated 3D inspection of glass jars. Oxford University have wide experience in developing specialized materials for sensing applications. In this project Oxford University will extend their materials technology (especially in the area of nanotechnology) to develop materials sensitive in the low energy x-ray region which IMS can use in the developed sensor.
