Summary on Grant Application Form
Problems of ignition and related phenomena in combustible mixtures are mathematically highly intractable in spatially-inhomogeneous situations. The Principal Investigator and the proposed Visiting Fellow have devised a scheme of Newtonian asymptotics to get round these difficulties, and this appears to be a very powerful and flexible idea. We propose in academic year 1997/98 to apply this idea to a range of problems in mathematical combustion theory, in 1,2 and 3 spatial dimensions, to predict the asymptotic structure of the entire chemical-gasdynamic field. We assume generally a simple 1-step reaction with Arrhenius kinetics, but will also begin an examination of multi-step chemical reactions using the same Newtonian asymptotic scheme.
