Summary on Grant Application Form
This project which is a collaboration between the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton and the Physics Department at the University of Kent (UKC), centres around the production and exploitation of a novel optical component, optical fibre in which ithe linear electro-optic effect is present. Its application to measuring electric field both at low frequencies used in the power industries and at frequencies up to the GHz region using interferometric and fibre laser-based technology. Work will be undertaken in order to improve the understanding of the mechanism of poling, to increase the magnitude of the effect and to pull a range of fibres optimised in shape and composition. Fibres will be investigated as interferometric and fibre laser-based intrinsic electric field sensors with applications to the power industry and to construct high-frequency probes. Key reaftures: use of poled fibre to make integrated field measurements to find the true potential difference between two points, all dielectric probes capable of measuring FR fields at GHz frequencies, multipfexing probes.
