The primary goal of the proposed overall LINK project is the development and demonstration of the technology required for the manufacture of the next generation low cost high speed (2.5Gb/s) fibre-optic transceivers. The project will draw together the complementary expertise of the partners in electrical and optical design, in state-of-the-art fabrication technology and in systems studies. Initially a range of optoelectronic models developed at Bristol will be combined with the electronic ones from Barnard Microsystems for device operation. In addition, a new advanced dynamic two dimensional beam propagation laser diode model has been developed at Bristol including noise and temperature effects and is sufficiently fast to be useful for design studies. the model will be used for optimisation of device structure, fabricated devices finally being tested at Bristol. A second research goal will be development of optimised both multi-mode and monomode network links using the transceivers. Particular emphasis will be placed on a new system technique recently discovered at Bristol has been demonstrated to allow up to 400% enhancement of attainable transmission distance in multi-mode systems. The project will aim to determine the limits of such techniques and whether that can be extended to 10Gb/s rates.
