Summary on Grant Application Form
Many materials showing the most interesting physical properties (e.g. magnetism, superconductivity, metal-insulator transitions etc.) are also unusual metals, and we need to understand the transitions that are made to the other states. Until recently, there has been a natural tendency to concentrate on the most anomalous cases such as cuprate materials with superconducting transitions near 100K. While this has been successfully defined many of the open questions, it has made clear that we are faced with a formidable challenge. A good way to make further progress is to pat attention to studying materials which are at the boundary of out understanding. Sr2RuO4 and T12Ba2CuO6 are particularly appropriate, the former because it is a well understood Fermi liquid at very low temperatures which crosses over to a highly anomalous metal as the temperature is raised, and the latter because apparently more standard metallic behaviour can be achieved by chemical doping. A programme of measurements investigating the effects of temperature, anisotropy and defects on the stability of the metallic state is proposed.
