This research project is concerned with (RCM)2 for railways. Its aim is to investigate issues relating to the integration of Reliability-Centred Maintenance and Remote Condition Monitoring, for railway single-throw mechanical equipment with a complete railway level-crossing barrier (LCB) system as a case study. The absolute reliability and availability of the safety-critical LCB system is of a paramount importance for railway operators. A cost-effective remote condition monitoring system can be the solution. This can be in the form of a remotely monitored state-of-the health reporting system and/or an intelligent and portable health monitor tool, both of which can predict failures and provide early warning if incipient and developing faults.The research aims to investigate broad (RCM)2 integration issues and more specifically to demonstrate improved reliability using a generic remote health-monitoring system (embedded implementation) with a standard interface to different types of LCB systems from various manufacturers. The objectives also include drawing generic solutions to modelling, simulation and failure-prediction of single-throw mechanical equipment as part of the PhD programme.
