Electromagnetic flowmeters are now widely used in the process industry for metering conducting liquids. They have advantages of being accurate, reliable, non-intrusive and relatively insensitive to changes in velocity profile. Despite the above advantages, the electromagnetic flowmeter has one big limitation. It cannot be used with low conductivity or dielectric liquids. The objective of this research programme is to investigate the generic problems associated with the electromagnetic measurement of non-conducting liquids. Hardware configurations and signal processing schemes which can be used to form the basis of a universal electromagnetic flowmeter will then be designed and tested experimentally. Work already performed at Cranfield University will be used as the starting point for this research programme.
