Summary on Grant Application Form
We have recently shown that the introduction of polypyridine as an electron transport layer into a PPV LED greatly enhances the attainable quantum efficiency and brightness levels of the device. Levels which are extremely attractive to industry have been obtained whilst retaining the use of stable electrodes. We propose to synthesise new polymers, based on pyridine, pyrimidine and thiazole, for use as electron transport layers in LED devices. A range of new materials, including regioregular derivatives are our targets. They have been chosen so that different aspects of the interaction between the nitrogen lone pair electrons and backbone aromaticity can be investigated and related to the mechanism of electron transport in these materials. We aim to characterise the optical absorption, photoluminescence and electrochemical properties of these polymers, and to develop the optimum conditions for the formation of high-quality thin films.
