The aim of the proposed research is a systematic investigation of supported, mass-selected noble metal and transition metal clusters. We will focus on clusters of small size (1-10 atoms), where quantum size effects are most significant. We want to understand the size dependent properties of small clusters deposited on a substrate (notably graphite) and the nature of the cluster-surface interaction e.g. charge transfer between the cluster and the substrate. We will also investigate how these properties are affected by the interaction of the clusters with molecules adsorbed on the cluster surface (e.g. O2 adsorption on Ag clusters). The molecular adsorption experiments will employ both inert supports (rare gas layers) and 'active' supports (e.g. graphite). The experiments will probe the electronic structure of clusters (HREELS, UPS, etc.), the vibrational properties of adsorbed molecules (HREELS) and the geometric structure of the clusters (on graphite etc.) by STM. Such studies are relevant to the possible application of cluster-assembled materials in catalysis, gas sensing, etc.
