Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme is twofold in theme: (i) an investigation of asymptotic behaviour of integrable functions in the development of invariance principles for dynamical systems modelled by differential equations, differential inclusions and infinite-dimensional abstract semi-flows; (ii) application of such principles in analysis and design of universal adaptive regulators for classes of uncertain nonlinear and infinite- dimensional systems, with emphasis on high-gain and low-gain control strategies. An important aspect of the programme is the synthesis of adaptive controllers which can cope with nonlinearities of the type that permeate engineering practice: deadzones, saturation, hysteresis, backlash and quantization. The goal is to contribute to the development of a rigorous - and applicable - theory of adaptation through utilization of tools from nonlinear/nonsmooth mathematics and infinite-dimensional control theory in a context of systems natural to control engineering.
