In this proposed research programme we plan to synchronously pump a femtosecond mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) using a self-modelocked vibronic laser that produces sub-15fs pulses. By exploiting the dispersion-compensated dielectric mirror technology now available from Stingl OEG and diode-based pumping (diode-based minilaser pumping of Ti:sapphire) we intend to demonstrate that it will be practical to generate sub-20fs OPO pulses around the 5mm spectral region. To do this, we shall design a specific configuration for the laser/OPO combination and, in addition, we shall develop further our autocorrelator diagnostic technique that is based on a broadband LED. By bringing together our most recent ideas on low-threshold femtosecond lasers and parametric oscillators with diagnostics such as our real-time frequency-resolved optical gating scheme, we believe that we can construct and characterise a single-optical cycle source in the mid-infrared.
