Concern about the sustainability and environmental impact of buildings has led to a renewed interest in natural ventilation. The large ventilator apertures in the facades of naturally ventilated buildings create poor acoustic conditions . Conventional sound attenuation solutions tend to increase air flow resistance in the ventilator systems. For naturally ventilated buildings the prevailing forces which drive the air flows are relatively small and increases flow resistance can have a large impact on the efficiency of the system. This project will be the first systematic attempt to investigate the interaction of air flow and sound transmission through large natural ventilation openings. A range of noise control strategies will be investigated including that of active noise control which offers potential benefits including significant sound attenuation with little loss in pressure. The key element of the investigation will be the development of testing facilities capable of measuring air flow and sound transmission for a range of ventilator designs. These designs would be parametrically altered with guidance coming from computer modelling of the systems using the Boundary Element Method.
