Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to identify how users control shading in buildings and to develop systems which save and give users effective control. It will comprise:1. Analysis of a BRE database of venetian blind use in UK office buildings, to develop a mathematical model to predict occupant use of venetian blinds.2. Predicting lighting and thermal impact of shading systems in Pilkingtons thermal 'hot-box' testing facility and in BRE's daylighting test rooms.3. Monitoring of the new BRE office which incorporates moveable louvers. These will be operated under three different control algorithms; automatic control with manual override; free floating manual control; optimised 'smart' manual control. Monitoring will record louver positions under each control algorithm, and study the effect of the control algorithm on lighting energy use, occupant reaction and overheating in the space. This will be backed by thermal modeling by the University of Westminster.4. Development of smart control algorithms in collaboration with SOMFY, production of joint European Design Guidelines on smart solar control.
