The overall project goals are to a) assess the value of urban groundwaterb) develop management toold for urban groundwater by incorporating uncertainty analysis into groundwater models for defining capture zones and by assessing spatial pollution risks within these zones andc) test these with the data from the UK city of Nottingham. A city's demand for water is large. Cities have complex interactions with their underlying groundwater. New reacharge sources such as leaking water mains, sewers and soakaways ensure recharge id at least as great as equivalent rural areas, and combined with reduced industrial and public water supply abstractions since the 1950's has led to riseing groundwater level beneath many cities, with associated geotechnical implications. Urban groundwater is currently a largely neglected resource. Making full use of urban groundwater is a sound part in the development of the sustainable city. Positive management of urban groundwater will be of benefit to overlying cities, but is currently inhibited by the lack of knowledge and management tools. Particular needs area) understanding of sources and quantities of recharge and pollution and b) structures approach to groundwater protection and management which this study will address.
