Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this project is to explore a simpler approach than those previously suggested for broadband noise control in aircraft and one which is more acceptable to aircraft manufacturers. One of the simplifications to be explored is the use of simple independent control systems for each fuselage panel the basis of which is the lack of correlation between the vibration of adjacent panels in the target frequency range. Previous approaches to this problem have utilised vibration actuators which is not favoured by manufacturers. This project aims to explore the use of loudspeakers mounted in the trim panels. The project will analyse data taken from aircraft to ascertain the extent of correlation between the vibration of individual fuselage panels and the correlation between this vibration and the interior noise. A fundamental numerical study exploring the use of several independent control system swill be conducted. Further more detailed numerical studies will be carried out in order to ascertain optimal location for sensors providing a reference signal and the optimal filtering strategy for minimising the sound radiated by the panel and control loudspeaker. Finally an experimental study will implement, in the laboratory, the strategy devised with the numerical study.
