This proposal aims to reduce the harmonic distortion present on a particular small power network, through either reorganisation of system loading, or the use of corrective apparatus. The first task is to develop tools to provide accurate simulation of power systems. These will be created extending a commercial simulation package to provide a suite of common load models, and by building a flexible experimental facility. Tools will then be developed to evaluate how system reconfiguration can improve harmonic distortion at points within the network. Task 3 requires the development of control laws and signal processing algorithms to control an Active Shunt Filter (ASHF) circuit to provide voltage correction at the point of connection to the network. In conjunction with this the on-line power system impedance measurement techniques will be developed as a general instrumentation tool, and then refined for inclusion into the operation of the ASHF. The transient operation of both the impedance identification scheme and also the complete ASHF will be investigated, to complete the evaluation of the schemes developed. The conclusion to the project will be preparation of the final report.
