The performance of a porous solid as a selective absorbent is intimately related to its pore structure. The aim of this work is to develop a microporous carbon absorbent with a highly controlled structure which can be optimised for a particular absorptive separation. This will be done by synthesising a layered mineral template, impregnating the template with an organic precursor, polymerising then carbonising the precursor and finally leaching the template to leach the microporous carbon. In this way, it is hoped to combine the advantages of carbon absorbents (chemical , robustness, hydrophobicity) with something of the selectivity (and in particular the molecular sieving capability) shown by zeolites.As part of the project, a molecular simulation-based method will be developed to predict absorption equilibrium in the new absorbent material, as a function of the pore structure. This method will serve as an absorbent design tool, to identify the optimal pore structure for an absorptive seperation of interest.
