Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To investigate whether human visual processing is matched to the statistics of coloured natural scenes. In order to do this we will need to acquire a library of coloured natural images, calibrated such that the spatiochromatic statistics of the images are preserved.2. To develop efficient representations of spatiochromatic image data and to determine whether such representations could form a basis of human colour-image processing. Specifically we will (a) derive a linear systems representation (consisting of filters bandlimited in both chromatic and spatial-frequency space) of our natural-image data such that the information output by the linear filters is maximally decorrelated; (b) derive a non-linear transform of the natural image data using optimisation techniques; (c) to compare the linear and non-linear representations in respect of their ability to predict human psychophysical performance by incorporating them into ideal-observer models.3. To use the most efficient representations found from (b) above to develop improved algorithms for image compression, segmentation and colour -differencing for the benefit of the image-processing community.
