Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is for a generic research programme to understand the principles of particle and fibre organisation in filled polymers. Systems of interest will include particles, fibres and particle/fibre mixes as fillers within polymer matrices as well as compacted assemblies of polymer particles. The work will involve the interplay of results from physically modelled systems (on the mm scale) with those from numerical models. The computing aspects of the research will draw on methods developed in recent years for molecular modelling. Both the physical and the numerical experiments will be extended to include specific particle-particle interactions. The work will form the basis for future studies of mechanical and flow properties as well as the tailoring of the software in the context of industrially funded sub-projects.
