The proposed investigation seeks to exploit the particular advantages than can be gained through the use of infrared-active and environment sensitive organometallic complexes as chemical sensors. The specific objective is to develop sensors based on immobilised organometalcarbonyl probe groups which are suitable for the measurement of complex systems. The work will be carried out in three parts (a) the preparation of surface immobilised organometalcarbonyl probe groups, (b) an investigation of the use of FTIR diffuse reflectance techniques to interrogate immobilised sensors and the construction of fibre optic optrodes for remote sensing, and (c) an investigtion of the potential for simultaneous and selective differential responses in inhomogeneous sytems.
