Summary on Grant Application Form
Paramagnetic organometallic complexes are usually classified as 17- or 19-electron species. Our recent work suggests that extensive new synthetic chemistry is possible based on complexes with unpaired electron density delocalised onto co-ordinated alkyne ligands. The proposed new work will involve i) the preparation and characterisation of new redox-active complexes [primarily of the Cr group, Co and Rh (ii) ] including those in which the alkyne has one or more unsaturated co-ligands such as CO, CNR, NO, N2Aryl, PNAryl and P=CR, (ii) the synthesis (by both chemical and electrochemical methods) and characterisation of paramagnetic alkyne complexes (alkyne radicals) such as [ M (CO)2 alkyne) (HBR3)] (R=pyrazolyl), [M (CO) alkyne)2 (M-C5 R5 )] and [M (alkyne)2 (M-C5 R5 ) ], [Co (CO2 (PR3) (alkyne] and [Rh (diene) (HBR3 )] and their use as synthetic reagents in stoichiometric and catalysed processes, iii) the development of clean and selective electrosynthesis (including electrocatalysis), and iv) a study of water-soluble redox-active organometallic complexes.
