Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme describes a detailed investigation of ultrafast electronic processes in thin films and single crystal cuprate superconductors (mainly YBCO and BSSCO), which will shed light on the fundamental pairing mechanism responsible for high temperature superconductivity. The understanding of this mechanism has important implications for the development of new materials with higher critical temperatures. The wavelength of the probe will be extended from the current 0.4 - 1.5 micron range to the mid infrared 1.7 - 5.0 microns, and with the assistance of collaborators extension to 10 microns will be possible. We propose to study the effects of photodoping of YBCO material close to the metal-insulator transition. The role of disorder will be elucidated by studying photoexcitation of the undoped superconductor LCO.
