Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is aimed at developing methods for fabricating and integrating optical systems for operation over the frequency range from DC up to that of the optical carrier. The programme can be viewed as a matrix with the rows being photonic integrated circuit demonstrators and the columns being the generic technologies.The programme will develop work from the previous roll on fully integrated lasers, their use in all-optical order nonlinear devices to convert microwave modulated signals into THz radiation and access new regions of the spectrum.The generic technologies and area of expertise which will be used and developed include: quantum well intermixing, molecular beam epitaxy; dry etching and other processes related to the fabrication of gratings. The laboratory based research will be supported by a comprehensive programme of electromagnetic device and systems modelling.
