It has been established by a number of independent bodies that a significant proportion of road accidents have had incorrectly inflated tyres as a contributory cause of the incident.. This collaborative research programme will address the problem of continuously monitoring vehicle tyre pressure in service by using a novel SAW (surface acoustic wave) pressure sensor in combination with a unique remote interrogation method. The project will involve the deposition of piezoelectric zinc oxide think films on silicon substrates and the subsequent fabrication of SAW resonators and delay lines by photolithographic methods. Micromachining techniques will then be employed to construct a diaphragm from the underlying silicon substrate, which can be used as the basis of the pressure sensor. Further work will involve incorporating the device in a suitable package and the development of novel non-contact radio-frequency sensor interrogation techniques.
