The project aims to integrate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods in design of engineered timber products. The manufacture of wood composites embodies steps for which the technique of LCA is highly appropriate. The project involves case studies, representing generic processing of timber into three industrial materials: - 1) Laminated hardwood particleboard's. The LCA methodology will follow ISO standards to build and analyse life cycle inventories for each product. The potential for streamlining the LCAs using a reduced number of key unit processes of the life cycle for assessment of various engineering and design options will be specifically investigated. This approach will be rigorously tested to ensure that resolution is not compromised and to determine criteria and goals for acceptable streamlining. Engineering and design improvements to be evaluated in the LCA context include CNC routing, finger jointing, alternative resin systems, sandwich panels of different core materials and surface improvement techniques. The project is expected to improve the quality of manufacture and use of engineered wood on a whole life cycle basis.
