Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall objective of the proposed research is to establish that it is feasible in practice to use wall compliance to prevent cavitation damage in pumps and other hydraulic machinery. Fundamental research will be carried out to provide the knowledge required for developing procedures for designing compliant walls for this purpose. There is evidence that a compliant wall with the appropriate properties repels single cavitation artificially induced in static water. We intend to study experimentally and theoretically the effect of wall compliance in the more realistic use of vaporous cavitation occurring in flowing water-either in the form of single or multiple bubbles. We aim to create a flow environment which reflects practical applications.
