Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will (A) investigate contaminated soil and groundwater at a representative gas-works site and quantify the physical, hydrological and chemical characteristics and assess the transport of organic contaminants to groundwater. (B) in-situ microbial degradative activity will be evaluated using RT-PCR and 14C-mineralization techniques and the potential for enhancement assessed and tested. (C) The information on biodegradative activity will be incorporate within a modelling framework, in order to predict the long-term impact of current and enhanced in-situ bioremediation. (D) The model will be developed as a decision support system to provide guidance for bioremediation design for groundwater protection.
