Summary on Grant Application Form
An interdisciplinary experimental research programme will involve the study of the sliding wear resistance of thermal-spray coatings under boundary lubrication. It is clearly focused on one sector - the automotive industry and is further restricted to reciprocating wear under boundary lubrication as experienced in piston assemblies. The study will integrate the study of surface degradation of thermal spray coatings with the surface effects induced by anti-wear additives. Studies to date have considered extensively the thermochemistry of anti-wear additives and studies on traditional materials have demonstrated additive-additive interactions at worn surfaces. However, in the area of ceramic and cermet tribology there is little information on the physical and chemical effects of the more complex surface on the formation, stability and structure of wear films. As a result their performance in lubricated conditions is not fully understood.
