Summary on Grant Application Form
Conventional polymeric or carbon-based membranes offer excellent selectivity but have considerable limitations in terms of their temperature and/or oxidative stability, making them unsuitable for many catalytic processes. This proposal seeks to develop novel high temperature ceramic materials for use as micro/mesoporous membranes to overcome these limitations whilst retaining the physical properties which are necessary for optimum performance. The new materials are based on silicon carbide/carbon composite ceramics formed by the pyrolysis of polycarbosilianes and polysilazanes. Feasibility studies have shown that these materials can be produced with the necessary high surface areas, micro/mesoporous structure and very high temperature stability.
