Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will aim to demonstrate that it is possible to construct a self-sustaining artifical system with both computational and energetic automony, attributes previously only found in natural systems. The system, modelled on a termite colony, will consist of a number of small autonomous mobile robots, and a static methanogenic fermentation vessel fitted with a methane-fired electricity generator and battery charging system. The robots will capture slugs in a natural field environment, and will deliver the slug corpses to the fermentation vessel, where they will be fermented to generate methane. Robots will recharge their batteries at the charging station.
