Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this work is to develop an atomistic model for the surface exchange of oxygen between a ceramic oxide and the ambient gas. The kinetics of oxygen exchange will be measured for mixed conducting oxides, with the K2NiF4 and related structures, as a function of temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, doping levels and surface orientation. These oxides have been chosen as they change stoichiometry from oxygen excess (interstitials) to oxygen deficiency (vacancies). Data on surface orientation effects will be obtained from single crystals, and by the use of a combination of EBSP and SIMS on ceramic samples.
