Microstructured `photonic crystals' display a `photonic band structure' which, at wavelengths comparable to the periodicity of the structure, may be so profoundly modified as to create a band of frequencies within which no propagating electromagnetic modes exist. Such materials have great potential technological importance as waveguides. Spontaneous emission within the forbidden gap is suppressed; photonic crystals have the potential for control of the emission spectra of LEDs, reduction of laser threshold currents and for the development of other novel photonic devices. Excited atoms whose radiative decay is frustrated in such a material interact to produce long-lived entangled states; this is a candidate for quantum computation. Although some of these phenomena have been demonstrated in microwave and infrared materials it is a considerable technological challenge to produce a photonic band gap in the visible region of the spectrum. We propose a novel fabrication route using a four-beam intensity grating within a photosensitive polymer to produce photonic crystals; this technique is conceptually simple and flexible and has potential for low-cost volume production. We propose to develop and demonstrate the potential of this process by fabricating, assessing and, in conjunction with theoretical modelling, optimising the properties of photonic crystals.
