Summary on Grant Application Form
The experimental group at Glasgow and the theoretical group at Durham have recently demonstrated clear two-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) effects in waveguide-based semiconductor microstructures. In this submission we proposed further theoretical and experimental development of that work and the exploration of its potential for application in a variety of photonic devices. In particular, we shall investigate experimentally the nonlinear response of a range of 1D-PBG structures. Theory development and simulations will be carried out in parallel, with the intention of producing general approaches which can model the range of nonlinear phenomena exhibited by the more complex 2D- and 3D-PBG structures. We also propose to explore the potential of photonic crystals based on Penrose tiling, which could lead to a valuable extension of the parameter ranges and material systems where photonic band gaps and related phenomena occur.
