Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to explore the potential for use of aluminosilicate nanotubes in the synthesis of novel nanoscale materials. Initial feasibility studies will focus on the use of the double layer tubular structure, imogolite. This material occurs naturally and can be synthesised. Some effort will be devoted to optimising the synthesis but the main part of the project will be concerned with studying the way in which imogolite interacts with model resin systems. The surface characteristics of the imogolite will be characterised and correlated with experimental observations and molecular models. Nanocomposite properties will also be measured and molecular models of the composites used to help understand their physical and mechanical properties.
