Summary on Grant Application Form
The work to be performed by Dr. Marjoribanks falls into two main categories. Firstly, in relation to harmonics from solids, he will help in the design and implementation of time-domain interferometry techniques to observe the effects of prepulses on the generation of harmonics. Secondly, he will help in the development of a high spatial and spectral resolutions UV spectrometer to be used to observe the spatial distribution of the low harmonics at the critical surface for solid harmonics, and at the point of production for harmonics from gases. This information is crucial if we are to gain a full understanding of the spatial distribution and divergence of harmonics from both gaseous and solid targets, and thus optimise the brightness of these novel sources.
