Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to develop and exploit novel methods of probing polymer thin film dynamics. Two methods will be used; (a) the direct measurement of glass transition temperatures in films down to tens of Angstroms in thickness, and (b) the measurement of the dynamics of so-called spinodal dewetting, in which a thin film dewets a liquid substrate driven by the amplification of interfacial capillary waves by dispersive forces. We expect both methods to give us complementary insights into effects of surfaces, interfaces and reduced dimensionality affect the dynamics of polymer chains.
