Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is aimed at providing inputs from a knowledge of the micro-mechanics of fracture in structural steels to various forms of statistical analysis used to characterise fracture on the macroscopic scale. The areas to be addressed are the Local Approach (Weibull statistics), Transition Temperature Shifts (Maximum Likelihood Methods/Bayesian Statistics) and Extrapolation of Data to Low Probability Occurrences/Lower Bounds. (Weibull or a new approach recently proposed by the applicant). The aim of the research is to increase confidence in the predictions made concerning safety and the life-extension of ageing engineering plant.
