Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to determine accurately the thermal parameters in a series of compounds containing methyl groups. These will be modelled in terms of torsional motions to test the existing theories of the liberation of such groups. Four compounds will be studied, to complement data already obtained on two others. The materials are carefully chosen to represent three distinct cases: those in which the methyl groups are fairly free to liberate; those where liberation is constrained by steric effect and those in which two methyl groups are close enough to undergo couple motions. Single crystal neutron diffraction data will be obtained as a function of temperature for all the materials studied, to allow both a decoupling of static and dynamic effect and a precise determination of zero-point effects. This information is vital in allowing unambiguous interpretation of spectroscopic measurments.and theoretical calculations on such materials. Only single crystal neutron diffraction allows reliable determination of the hydrogen adps which are so vital in this field and is the only unambiguous way of providing the structural basis for such work.
