Pyrochlore structured lead niobate (PN) based ceramics show great promise for use as microwave resonators since they have a low dielectric loss and a high dielectric constant. The relationship between structure - microstructure and properties in pyrochlore-structured microwave resonators will be investigated with the intention of developing a microwave material for high dielectric constant applications which is superior to those available at the moment. Particular attention will be paid to the value of the temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency which needs to be close to zero and tuneable. Cation substitutions into the base PN ceramic will be used to control this. An LCR meter and network analyser will be used to measure the electrical properties at low and high frequency, respectively. Microstructural and structural data will be obtained using a combination of x-ray diffraction, analytical and high resolution electron microscopy.
