Summary on Grant Application Form
The combustion instability caused by the interaction between acoustic waves and unsteady combustion currently limits the performance of aeroengines and power stations. The potential of active control to extend the stable operating range has been demonstrated using empirically designed controllers. This proposal is truly multi-disciplinary, bringing together experts in control and combustion instability. It will exploit a new model which captures the essential features of the nonlinear flame oscillation and has a simple analytical form. This model will be the basis for a series of control system design studies using recent advances in robust control.
