Summary on Grant Application Form
A newly developed high power (4kW, continuous wave) Nd: YAG which can be delivered via optical fibre will be used to investigate the cutting and surface treatment of metallic materials in order to determine the advantages over conventional high power CO2 lasers. Attention will be given to the analysis of mechanisms in the cutting and in the alloying processes with the objective of optimising laser parameters for maximum process efficiency. Techniques to be employed include high speed photography of the laser/materials interaction, calorimetry experiments to determine process efficiency, spectroscopic analysis of the laser induced plume and post-process metallography and high resolution electron microscopy.
