Summary on Grant Application Form
A new method to measure bond strengths will be developed based on the novel principle of measuring the oscillation of a surface acoustic wave sensor (SAWS) as a function of amplitude. At high amplitudes the chemical bonds between the molecules and surfaces can be broken and this can be detected by changes in the SAWS oscillation and by acoustic noise. A series of model thiols on gold will be studied to demonstrate the breaking of physisorbed, hydrogen and chemical bonds. The experiments will then be extended to Polymethylmethacrylate bonding between two silica surfaces and then to real adhesives.
