Summary on Grant Application Form
In this research programme, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) will used to determine the oxidation mechanisms and kinetics of the degradation of silicon-containing aluminide coatings on single crystal superalloys SRR99 and CMSX-4. Novel methods of chemical polishing and ion beam milling will be developed to create bevel tapers and cross-sections through the structures prior to SIMS analysis. The information from these novel approaches will complement data from SIMS, electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to produce comprehensive three-dimensional chemical maps that include microstructural information to provide a basis for a fundamental understanding of the oxidation behaviour of the system.
